Chicory and Oats is an excellent example of Burchfields late period, which art historian and critic John Canaday stated in a 1966 New York Times review would be Burchfield's enduring achievement. In Chicory and Oats Burchfield turned away from his more realistic interpretations of the urban landscape and returned to large, intense renditions of nature captured in swirling strokes, heightened colors and exaggerated forms; a more personalized and mystical vision of nature.
